Jonathan Gunthorpe read English and Russian at Leeds University gained an MA in music at the Birmingham Conservatoire and furthered his studies at the Royal College of Music. During his time there, he was chosen to sing Christus / St Matthew Passion, Biagio / Don Giovanni and Figaro / Le Nozze di Figaro. He completed his studies at the National Opera Studio supported by the Sybil Tutton Trust and Welsh National Opera.
Last season he returned to the Royal Opera as Nachtigall / Die Meistersinger. Jonathan has also just created the role of Quain / Thwaite (Jürgen Simpson) for Almeida Opera, which was also performed at the The Project, Dublin and Aldeburgh Festival and to great acclaim this summer. Concert engagements include performances at the BBC Proms, the Turku, Lufthansa and Perth Festivals and the English Chamber Orchestra, at venues such as the Barbican Hall, or Westminster Abbey.
Further engagements have included Pilgrim / Curlew River / Opera de Rouen, Aeneas / Dido and Aeneas for Ex Cathedra, Alidoro / La Cenerentola and Guglielmo / Cosi fan Tutte and Bach Magnificat.
Jonathan was featured in The Times "Great British Hopes", after his Royal Opera début as Angelotti / La Tosca and a recital with Malcolm Martineau at St John's, Smith Square.
This is Jonathan Gunthorpe's first year with Lyrique en Mer, he will be Papageno in The Magic Flute and Dancaïro in Carmen.
