The Citadelle Vauban
Overlooking the harbour of Le Palais , the Citadelle Vauban
symbolizes a thousand years of history in Belle Ile en mer. Founded in
the Middle Ages, rebuilt by Vauban from 1683, it shows off, after forty
years of restoration, ten hectares of bastion , courtine , blockhouse, powder
magazine, and arsenal in the middle of a landscaped garden and an
exceptional panorama.
Looking back...
Diverse historical collections are displayed in the heart of the Citadelle.
Great moments of Belle-Ile's past (Nicolas Fouquet, the Poisons
affair, Acadians) mix remembrances of the Belle-Ilois from past times
along with offerings from a generation of artists who, in the footsteps
of Claude Monet and Sarah Bernhardt, gained their inspiration
from the island.
...and Belle Ile's spirit
Exhibitions, concerts, theatre, conferences and talks are presented
every year in the Citadelle's architectural setting, maintaining this
calling of history and the the artistic world that bestowed has been handed
down to Belle-Ile.
It was the meeting between Monsieur & Madame Larquetoux
and Richard Cowan which enabled the creation of Lyrique en mer. Owners of
the Citadelle Vauban since 1960, these patrons completely devoted their
passion to rebuilding and restoring a site which would otherwise be
in ruins.
Since 2005, it is part of the Group Savry "les Hôtels Particuliers"
which was created in 1969 by Philip and Gerard Savry, saving the abandonment
of various private homes, registered or listed in the supplementary inventory
of historic monuments. By creating a quality inn and restaurant "La Table
du Gouverneur" that complement the unique set of Hotel Museum, the Citadel
Vauban offers a place of character and charm devoted to culture and relaxation
for your stay , receptions, seminars and conferences.
